What changed in the alphabet

On 21 October 2026, Uzbek Language Day, the President signed the law on the updated Uzbek alphabet (No. 1184). The new alphabet has 28 letters and the tutuq sign (apostrophe).

CurrentNewExample
Oʻ oʻÖ öoʻzbek → özbek
Gʻ gʻĞ ğgʻalaba → ğalaba
Sh shŞ şshahar → şahar
Ch chÇ çchoy → çoy
  • Ng is no longer a separate letter; spelling does not change.
  • The tutuq sign (apostrophe) stays: maʼno, sanʼat, taʼlim.
  • Takes effect six months after official publication — in April 2027.
  • Documents in the current alphabet, banknotes and securities remain valid. Textbooks and road signs will be replaced gradually.

In Word, Excel and PowerPoint

The Xato.uz add-in has a “New alphabet” button: the selected text or the whole document is converted with its formatting kept.

Spell check in both alphabets

Text in the new alphabet is checked too, and suggestions come in the alphabet the text is written in. If one text mixes the two alphabets, it is pointed out.

English names stay as they are

Names such as Microsoft and Chrome, links and email addresses stay unchanged.

Files are not stored

The Word file is converted in memory and returned right away — it is not stored on the server.

Are fonts and tables kept?

Yes. Only the letters change in the Word file: fonts, colors, bold text, tables, images, headers, footers and notes stay in place.
